Focus and Scope

eTopoi is a bilingual magazine which is published by the Excellence Cluster Topoi. It is an open access periodical, and all articles are available as PDF documents free of charge. In addition, eTopoi does not charge authors any publication or submission fees. eTopoi provides a forum of exchange between all disciplines in the area of classical and ancient studies, from pre- and early history to Egyptology and Near Eastern studies, to classical archaeology, classical philosophy, linguistics, literary studies, theories of science, and theology, and extending to other disciplines as well. Envisioned for inclusion in particular are articles dealing with the shaping and transformation of spatial structures and knowledge systems in ancient societies, as well as with perceptions of and reflections on these phenomena. The focus is on innovative forms of interdisciplinary collaboration, including geoscientific-archaeological projects and ones in computational archaeology, in the history of knowledge, and in historical geography. The magazine hence mirrors the orientations of both research institutes, the disciplines they represent, and the networks of partner institutions with which they are affiliated. It is available as a platform to all interested researchers worldwide.

Articles

Individual articles from the various fields of ancient and classical studies may be submitted at any time. Contributions need not be written by researchers belonging to either the Excellence Cluster Topoi or the Berliner Antike-Kolleg. Publication proceeds immediately following the conclusion of review procedures. The focus of interest is in particular on research papers from fields in ancient and classical studies which emphasize the spatial aspects of the cultures under investigation. Debate and analysis concerning theoretical and methodological approaches are explicitly prioritized.

Peer Review Process

Submissions which have been in principle accepted by the editorial team for peer-review will be further examined in a general evaluation process by a competent communicator. The communicator functions as an editor of the particular article and is personally named. The communicator also determines two peer reviewers, who evaluate the article anonymously („double blind peer review“). Finally, the communicator decides when the article is ready for publication.

The entire evaluation process is accompanied by and supported by the eTopoi editorial team.

Open Access Policy

eTopoi provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Publication Process

Provided the editors agree, contributions accepted for publication may also be supplied in languages other than German or English (the two languages of eTopoi) in addition to the version approved for publication. If a text is to be published in one language only, authors must supply proposed titles, abstracts, and keywords in the other required languages.

Full texts and abstracts are examined by native speakers, and final versions edited in the form of PDF documents. Authors receive PDF versions via email for review. All changes made to original manuscripts during the editing process are highlighted; incorporated as well are inquiries and suggestions for corrections. Authors are expected to carefully review PDF documents, which correspond to the page proofs of traditional publishing practices, and to convey final suggestions for corrections where appropriate. Finally, authors issue final approval for the publication of PDF documents.
